Plainville Downtown Block Party
Posted October 7th, 2008 by robin_michel
The Plainville Downtown Block Party is scheduled to run this weekend either Oct. 11or 12 depending on rain. Do you attend? What do you like or don't like about it? Is this event past its prime? Should the town or merchants organize more community events? What should they be?

Block Party
The town or merchants should organize more activities. The Tree lighting and Block Party are great family events. As long as the Block Party keeps the memory of Officer Robert Holcomb alive it should go on. We need to come together as a community and work together to get through tough times. Events like this build community spirit.

If the town wants to have a block party that is fine with me but why should they charge and admittance fee? There is no fee at the balloon festival.
Downtown Block Party
To answer one of your readers. The town is not hosting the Downtown Block Party.
The Plainville Police Association and the Downtown Merchants are. We charge admission to raise funds to support the Officer Robert M. Holcomb Memorial Scholarship. The $3.00 admission fee is reasonable and affordable and allows us to
continue giving scholarships to high school seniors in honor of Officer Holcomb. The vendors that pay to be at the event, keep their profits, so the only money we raise is from the admission and raffle. At the Balloon Festival, the Fire Company raises money by selling food, t-shirt,crafts, etc.. I guess the short answer is, it's a fund raiser. No different than going to a stag party or dance to raise funds for a person or charity. The bottom line is that the Plainville Police will do what ever we can to keep the memory of Officer Holcomb alive. After all, he did die for our community.

i didnt attend but i have in the past and it just seems like the reason most people go is to drink at the bar down there, this town is full of bars and drunks!! i would like to see more family events going on in our town but it seems that everyone has lost respect for plainville and rather have get togethers only if it involves beer, pretty sad!!! well with that said it's not place i would bring my kids for the simply fact is the love and respect of our town is lost and also the fear of some drunks cursing and fighting around my kids!!!
Block Party
I don't know what Block Party your reader has attended in the past, but the one on October 11th was attended by many families. The committee plans the event around family and kids activities. Just take a look at the pictures taken by the Citizen; Face painting, moon-walk, dunk tank, jazz band, kids from the dance school performing and food vendors. Second, no alcohol is allowed on the outside and in the 6 years we've held the block party, there has never been a fight or drunks cursing around. About a dozen Plainville Police officers volunteer their time to make sure the streets are safe.
If you don't want to come, that's your business, but don't make up stories!
Block Party and Community Activities
I agree with everything you said. Along with the Tree Lighting and Block Party, I would love to see something along the lines of a Scarecrow Contest for the month of October. It could be a town-wide activity that includes families, the Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, town merchants and other organizations in town. Perhaps it could be incorporated with the Recreation Department's Halloween Contest/Party. Everyone could create scarecrows which could be displayed along Whiting and West Main Streets. I've seen it done in other towns and it's a great display of community involvement. And yes, the Block Party should continue - it's a great event that keeps Bobby's memory alive. He would have had a splendid time participating in it.
