Downtown Block Party - The 2008 Downtown Block Party, sponsored by the Plainville Downtown Merchants and the Plainville Police Association, will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, 5 to 11 p.m. Events include dancing in the streets, door prizes, live music, special appearances. Walkathon for Plainville Association for Retarded Citizens - The walkathon will be Saturday, Oct. 11, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Norton Park. Registration begins at 9 a.m. It is in honor of Helen Coughlin and sponsored by Manafort Brothers. The U.S. Marines Color Guard will perform the opening ceremonies. Monthly breakfast - An "all-you-can-eat" monthly breakfast will be held on the second Sunday of every month at Our Lady of Mercy Church Parish Center, 19 S. Canal St., from 8 to 11 a.m. The choice of menu is juice, eggs, western eggs, sausage, ham, hash browns, Texas French toast, bagels, doughnuts and coffee. Donation for adults is $4 and children $1. Children under 6 are free. Everyone is welcome and this is open to the public.

Columbus Day closings - The Plainville Municipal Center, the Plainville Public Library, the Plainville Senior Citizens Center and Plainville Community Schools will be closed Monday, Oct. 13 in observance of Columbus Day. Refuse collection will take place as usual.

Movie showing - On Tuesday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m., at the Plainville Public Library, 56 E. Main St., Friends of the Plainville Library will present a viewing of the movie, "Made of Honor" starring Patrick Dempsey. Special voter registration - The Registrars office will conduct special voter registration sessions at the Plainville Municipal Center, 1 Central Square, on Saturday, Oct. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Tuesday, Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. These sessions are for any residents who wish to vote in the Nov. 4 Presidential Election and are not now registered in the Town of Plainville. This also applies to any resident who has changed their name or address in the last year. A limited registration session will be held on Monday, Nov. 3 from 9 a.m. to noon for those whose qualifications as to age, citizenship or residence was attained after the Oct. 28 deadline. Registration forms are available at the Plainville Public Library, 56 E. Main St., the Town Clerk's office at the Municipal Center and the Registrars office now located in room 302. Conservation Commission hike - The Conservation Commission is planning a hike for Sunday, Oct. 19, 12:30 p.m., beginning at the trail on New Britain Avenue. People can park at Manafort Brothers' parking lot. Hikers will visit Hospital Rock, a boulder marking the location of a smallpox hospital established in the 1700s. Hikers should wear comfortable clothes and hiking shoes.
Police/fire departments softball - The Plainville Police and Fire departments will have a softball game to benefit the Plainville Food Pantry. It will be played on Oct. 19, at 1 p.m. at the Plainville High School field. Admission to the game will be a cash donation or non-perishable food item. It will be the best two out of three games.
Worship for special needs children - A worship service, Rhythms of Grace, for special needs children will reconvene Sunday, Oct. 19., 1 p.m., at Church of Our Saviour, 115 W. Main St., Plainville. This family worship service includes lots of hands-on crafts, bible stories and Communion. All are welcome. The church is handicapped accessible. For more information, contact the Rev. Foster parenting session - Wheeler Clinic will hold an informational session on foster parenting during an open house at 88 East St., Wednesday, Oct. 22. This no-obligation open house provides information about the "Children in Families" therapeutic foster care program. Lions Pancake Breakfast - Lions Pancake Breakfast - The Plainville Lions Club is holding its Fall Pancake Breakfast Sunday October 26, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Our Lady of Mercy Parish Center, 19 South Canal St. The breakfast offers pancakes, French toast, sausages, strawberries and cream, and beverages. Adult admission in advance is $5 or at the door $5.50. Children 7 to 12 and senior citizen admission is $4.50. Admission is free for children under 6 years of age. Halloween party - A Halloween Party will be held Friday, Oct. 31 at the Recreation Department parking lot, 50 Whiting St. from 4 to 5 p.m. for ages preschool to grade 5.
